# Floating floors: choosing the right floor for your home

Quick answer

A floating floor has boards joined to one another rather than fixed to the subfloor. Hybrid, laminate and some engineered timber use this method, but their backing, moisture and installation requirements differ, so choose a complete system that suits the room, the supporting floor and any apartment rules.

A long view through a home can make the floor feel like one continuous surface. Achieving that finish starts with the construction beneath it, including where the floor needs room to move and how it meets adjoining rooms.

Floating describes an installation method, not a material or an acoustic rating. The [ATFA explanation](https://www.atfa.com.au/uncategorized/what-to-do-when-you-have-a-flooring-problem-consumer/) describes connected boards that move together without being fixed to the supporting floor. That distinction is useful when comparing samples that look similar but need different installations.

## What types of flooring can be floated?

Laminate and rigid-core hybrid are familiar floating options. Engineered timber may also be suitable, depending on its maker’s instructions. Decide which material and installation system you are considering before comparing thickness or underlay.

Start with the construction, then compare the finish
| Option | What to establish | Useful next guide |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hybrid | Attached backing and whether any extra layer is permitted | Acoustic hybrid flooring |
| Laminate | Approved underlay and moisture provisions | Acoustic underlay for laminate |
| Engineered timber | Whether the particular board can be floated or bonded | Floating vs glue-down flooring |

The categories do not dictate every detail. [ATFA’s material guide](https://www.atfa.com.au/uncategorized/wood-and-vinyl-based-flooring-consumer/) separates wood-based and vinyl-based constructions. Record the material, fixing method and backing for the exact range on your shortlist.

## Are floating floors noisy?

Separate sound in the room from sound reaching the room below. A hollow footfall or localised joint creak is not the same as a measured impact-sound result between apartments. A floor can need investigation for one without proving anything about the other.

For an apartment, ask for the complete acoustic report. The [AAAC explanatory note](https://aaac.org.au/resources/Documents/Public/AAAC%20Guideline%20for%20Apartment%20and%20Townhouse%20Acoustic%20Rating%20-%20Explanatory%20Note%20V2.0.pdf) treats performance as a property of the floor and building together. Keep the slab, ceiling, underlay and fixing method beside the reported number.

If a floor is already creaking or clicking, use [our diagnosis guide](https://monkeyfloors.com/guides/why-floorboards-creak) to record the symptom before asking for a repair. If noise travels downstairs, begin with [soundproof flooring](https://monkeyfloors.com/soundproof-flooring) and the building’s written requirement.

## What should you check before installation?

Give the installer a room plan and ask for a written account of the preparation. The questions worth resolving are practical:

- Is the existing surface sound, dry and flat enough for this particular floor?
- Which underlay or attached backing is specified, and does it need a separate moisture layer?
- Where will movement gaps and room transitions sit?
- What happens at the kitchen joinery, balcony door, carpet junction and entry door?
- Which items of the existing floor need removal, repair or levelling?

A board’s total thickness is only one part of the finished height. Ask for the full build-up at each threshold, including preparation and any approved underlay. Look at that detail before choosing trims: a trim should resolve a planned junction, not conceal an unresolved level change.

Ask the installer to mark the applicable preparation and movement requirements on the room plan. Record the instruction version used, so any proposed change can be checked against the same document.

## How do you keep the finish considered?

View a larger sample beside the fixed finishes: cabinetry, stone, paint and the lightest part of the room. Then ask the installer to show the proposed board direction and transitions on the plan. These are design decisions; they do not establish acoustic performance.

For an open living area, talk through any requested uninterrupted run before ordering. A manufacturer’s movement requirement may affect where a break is needed. [Expansion gaps and trims](https://monkeyfloors.com/guides/floating-floor-expansion-gaps) deserve attention at the design stage, when an intentional junction is still easy to plan.

## Which option belongs on your shortlist?

Use the material comparison that matches your actual choice: [hybrid vs laminate](https://monkeyfloors.com/guides/hybrid-vs-laminate-flooring), [hybrid vs vinyl](https://monkeyfloors.com/guides/hybrid-vs-vinyl-flooring), or [hybrid vs engineered timber](https://monkeyfloors.com/guides/hybrid-vs-engineered-timber). If the finish is settled but the fixing method is not, compare [floating with glue-down flooring](https://monkeyfloors.com/guides/floating-vs-glue-down-flooring).

In an apartment, make the final shortlist after checking the [strata flooring requirements](https://monkeyfloors.com/strata-flooring-rules). Keep the approved construction with the order so the floor you receive is the one the installer and committee assessed.

## Questions, answered

### Is floating flooring the same as laminate?

No. Floating is a fixing method. Laminate, hybrid and some engineered timber systems can use it, subject to the product instructions.

### Does a floating floor always need a separate underlay?

No. Some boards have attached backing and restrict extra underlay. Check the exact installation guide before adding another layer.

### Can I choose one floor for every room?

Check each room against the product instructions, moisture requirements and permitted installation area. A continuous visual scheme may still need planned transitions.
